Officer Jared Shatkin smelled marijuana after stopping their 2008 BMW on northbound Route 17 at 12:45 p.m. Thursday, Detective Sgt. James DePreta said.
A search of the vehicle turned up pot, along with several bogus state identifications and credit cards, he said.
The driver, Moises Mendez, 24, and his passengers -- James Cousar, 33, and Jonathan Coriano, 22 -- were taken into custody.
Detectives found Cousar's photo on driver's licenses bearing the names of identify theft victims, DePreta said.
The trio had two new iPhones worth nearly $750 that were bought through victims' accounts and was headed to a local shopping mall for more, the sergeant said.
Mendez was charged with pot possession and released on a summons.
Cousar and Coriano were being held on $42,500 bail each in the Bergen County Jail, charged with attempted identity theft, trafficking in stolen IDs and possession of the bogus cards, the pot and the proceeds.
